Beating The Quarantine Blues : FieldTest Gives Their Working From Home Tips

The Coronavirus outbreak has been an unforeseen challenge for many. We are all doing what we can to stay safe and healthy, and for many of us that means maintaining a responsible social distance for the time being. Accordingly, many organizations have asked employees to work remotely until it is safe to return to our normal schedules. If you've never worked from home, it can feel like your world has turned upside-down. Between the change in schedule and the change in scenery it can take a lot of adjusting to get into the swing of things, but we’re all in this together.

This week we decided to share a few tips from members of our team on how we’ve been able to beat the quarantine blues and make the best of things while working from home. We hope these help you adjust to your own shifting schedules and show you that you’re not alone in trying to find a new normal during these unpredictable times. So get your desk chair or sofa adjusted, take a sip from your favorite coffee mug and pause that Netflix show that’s “just on as background noise”.. Here are the FieldTest team’s tips on how to make the most of working from home:

1. Define Your Space and Schedule

“FieldTest has an office space in Highland Park, which I love and can’t wait to get back to, but I have at least two healthy stretches on my resume of jobs that asked me to work from home. Clearly defining your work day is incredibly important. When your work space is one room over from your home space, the habit of answering that first work email as soon as you wake up and powering through until the daylight disappears can develop rather quickly. Instead, set a start time and an end time to your work day and stick to it. It’s fine to bend the rules a little and start earlier or work later as needed, but try to keep to the hours you set as much as possible. Sounds like a no brainer, but this is something I learned early on and helped with my mental clarity when the physical ideas of work & home were harder to separate.”

-Seth, Head of Partnerships

2. Make Time for The Family

“Working at home with two young children comes with both challenges and benefits. I write down a schedule every day so my son knows when I’m taking breaks and what activity we will do during that break. This does not stop him from setting up shop right next to me and persistently asking me if it’s time for a break. Every day between Slack meetings and spreadsheets we take some time to go on spy adventures, fight ninjas and discover buried dinosaur bones in the yard.”

- Peter, CEO

3. Break up the Monotony With New Creative Hobbies

“I’ve discovered that I am actually quite good at (and enjoy) cooking!  Prior to quarantine, I only cooked on special occasions or to zap something after work. Since the shelter-at-home order I’ve been cooking 3 meals a day, and out of necessity bore excitement and discovery. I’ve been researching fun recipes and experimenting, and it helps to break up the day when working from home, creating something fun to do with my partner at lunch break.“

-Gibby, CPO
